O-Janà (IT/SE)
Alessandra Bossa – piano, electronics
Ludovica Manzo – voice
O-Janà is a duo that brings together singer Ludovica Manzo and electronic musician/pianist Alessandra Bossa, two composers and improvisers with different backgrounds. The combination of these two artists, each charged with spontaneity, curiosity and audacity, is exciting and the result of it is a music which moves from electronics to songwriting to free-improvisation. The name O-Janà comes from the word Janara, wich means “witch” in Neapolitan.
The main characteristic of the duo is to expand boundaries in exploring and experimenting in the field of song composition and free improvisation, working on their own original material. Compositions are characterized by smooth and liquid soundscapes with melodies lying on a mix of prepared piano and electronic sounds while their lyrics are, by turns, funny or poignant or thought-provoking.
Although they are always looking for the clear structure and the “song” form, O-Janà’s concerts have a strong free improvisational component where sounds can sometimes evolve into distorted beats and jagged lines.
O-Janà has performed in several festivals and venues in Italy and abroad. Their first self-titled Ep was recorded at The Academy of Music and Drama of Göteborg, Sweden and released in May 2012. An extract from this album was also used as the soundtrack for the shortfilm Tram Mob, by Maude (2012) and for videos “Il mondo in un minuto” of Repubblica Tv.
Their last album “Inland Images” (Folderol Records) is the result of a long-lasting collabroation between O-Janà and percussionist/drummer Michele Rabbia, and also featuring norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset. This work is a label-free journey between icy abstraction and vibrant pulsation through boundless territories, where song, melody and chamber music find a place along with neoclassical and jazz nuances. “Inland Images” is a life story lived by three artists who have established a dialogue from very distant places and latitudes, and this is why it is a work of contemporary and international breath.

MOVE String Quartet from Berlin explores an innovative string sound, playing fresh, powerful chamber music with an edge. Their original music merges classical sensibility with the vitality of jazz and rock energy.
In their new program „Short Stories“, every piece opens a musical world of its own. Each tale is told in its own specific way, together forming a whole. The quartet presents these musical stories with captivating intensity: delicate pieces encounter tunes with rock energy, vast nordic space („Iceland“) meets a wry cowboy number („Horse“), a dizzying musical labyrinth („Mirror Mirror“) contrasts with the prickly „Shake It Off“ or the dynamic „Turn Back Never“.
The internationally acclaimed bandmembers are masters of both refined „classical“ tones, and of more contemporary gritty, „dirty“ sonorities: muscular and delicate, playful and laconic, full of character and emotive. The musicians feed each other with fresh impulses and surprises, keeping the band interactive and wide awake. Their unconventional line-up with a double bass replacing the second violin makes for an especially rich, warm sound.
With inspiring verve, the quartet performs ear-opening music. A very European vision of jazz – a string quartet for the 21st century!
Press:
“Absolutely mesmerizing… It’s a string quartet that creates the most enchanting chamber music… An album so beautiful at times, it’s stunning….It’s a beautiful recording, of elegance and warmth.” (Bird is the worm)
“About as beautiful as it gets. Harmonies as warm as sunlight, melodies that melt the heart.“ (Emusic)
“Beautiful melodic motifs, harmonic explosions and refined tonal elegance“ (Longplayrecenzje)
(Rondo-Magazin)
