ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Collective Drifting
A workshop by the cello quartet Hunter Underwater
The cello quartet Hunter Underwater invites you to the workshop “Collective Drifting” – an exploration of sound, presence, and spontaneous creation, followed by a concert performed by the quartet. The four cellists share their individual perspectives on improvising on the cello, offering insight into their personal paths into the practice. Together, they open spaces for listening, experimentation, and creative exchange.

Participants will:
– renew their musical and creative inspiration
– strengthen their confidence and fluency in improvisation
– discover playful and practical exercises for continued artistic growth
– experience making music with open, supportive, and curious fellow musicians

The workshop is open to instrumentalists and vocalists of all musical traditions – professionals, amateurs, and curious explorers alike. No prior experience in improvisation is required. In an energetic, humorous, and open-minded atmosphere, participants are encouraged to move beyond the limits of formal training while building on their technical and expressive abilities within their own musical language.

Hunter Underwater cellists are:
Guilherme Rodrigues
Gábor Hartyáni
Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu
Hui-Chun Lin

We encourage you to bring your instruments but it is not necessary to participate in the workshop.

YII

Yii consists of two individuals that meet each other in a world of strange, surreal dreams, where narratives take unexpected turns and somehow familiar faces remain unknown.
Wandering through these outlandish realms, they find their bearings with nothing but each other to relate to, while their set course remains anything but set; it becomes a winding journey through spheres of acoustic phenomena of voice and saxophone, a path of uncertain outcomes bound by their mutuality and curiosity.

Luka Zabric – alto saxophone
Laura Zöschg – voice

HUNTER UNDERWATER

Hunter Underwater is a Berlin-based cello quartet founded by Hui-Chun Lin. Since 2020, the group has been exploring the intersection of improvisation and composition, creating a unique sonic language that blends deep, warm, sustained tones with high-frequency textures.
A characteristic quality of the ensemble’s sound is its use of extended techniques, the interplay of noise and tone, and the incorporation of prepared objects placed on the cellos. Their music often features intricate structures and complex forms, setting Hunter Underwater apart as a distinctive voice in the field of contemporary music.

The quartet’s repertoire spans improvised and contemporary music, real-time composition, and sound art. Their compositions frequently reflect themes such as the environment, landscapes, mythical creatures, and occasionally historical narratives. Works by the group often resonate with contemporary events or natural phenomena, adding layers of relevance and urgency.

All four members — Guilherme Rodrigues, Gábor Hartyáni, Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu, and Hui-Chun Lin — are experienced chamber musicians, composers, and improvisers. Coming from diverse cultural and musical backgrounds, they bring a rich variety of perspectives to their collaborative work. Their performances are deeply rooted in the moment, creating an intense and dynamic listening experience.
