The music is inspired by the colorful melodic ragas and intricate intense rhythmic language of the Indian Classical Music Tradition. Most of the composition and adaptations bares the personal and delicate touch of award-winning composer Lars Møller.
Kala Ramnath, violin and Abhijit Banerjee, tablas
are considered amongst the best performers of their generation, and they have both toured all over the world. At their last visit to Denmark (KoncertKirken 5. Sep 2015) – they got the following response: “åbnede døre I mit sind, som jeg ikke engang kendte til” – “opened door to my mind, that I did’t know existed” (Information, 7. Sep 2015).
Lars Møller, tenor sax
After living in New York 1987-89, playing with a number of legendary jazz musicians, Lars Møller spent several prolonged periods in New Delhi in the early 90 ́s assimilating the highly emotional Indian classical music. As a composer, Møller delicately combines his knowledge of the American jazz tradition with the melodic Nordic tradition and a very broad awareness of European classical music. His most recent release with AJO “ReWrite of Spring” has been called “A milestone in Danish Jazz” (Weekend Avisen). Presently he is composer in residence with AJO.
Thor Madsen, guitar
Played/recorded internationally with Nublu Orchestra, Butch Morris, Graham Haynes, Kenny Wollesen, Jesse Murphy, Avi Bortnick and New York based “Lemon” and “Wax Poetic”. Also works as a producer – including “ReWrite of Spring”.
Jonas Johansen, drums
One of the leading drummers of Europe has recorded more than 170 albums and performed with McCoy Tyner, Phil Woods, Dave Sanborn, Maria Schneider, John Scofield, Eliane Elias, Milt Jackson, Mike Stern, Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, and Joe Lovano.
Aarhus Jazz Orchestra (AJO) is one of Scandinavia’s leading big bands, performing more than 70 concerts annually. The band has performed with a many of the most important jazz musicians of our time, including Grammy-winner Kurt Elling, guitar icon John Scofield and saxophone master David Liebman. In recent years AJO has done projects with global perspectives including musicians from Gambia and India. In connection with the Aarhus 2017 project “Bollywood Beats and Big Band”, AJO in not only presenting a full scale orchestra project – but also this IndoJazz smallgroup project.
