Marilyn Mazur (percussion & drums) solo (US/DK)
————————–
Marilyn Mazur is one of the true gems of improvised music. Born in New York City in 1955, but based in Denmark for most of her life. She was active in the 70s as a dancer, composer and pianist, and then switched to percussion and drums as her main instruments when she was 19. Since then Marilyn has been active as a composer, bandleader and musician in a vast number of connections. She has been a member of the orchestras of Miles Davis (1985-89), Wayne Shorter (1987) and Jan Garbarek (1991-2005), as well as has had a very rich solo career full of world music influences, recording among others for the legendary German label ECM. Marilyn will perform solo for us and believe me, it will be legendary!
Sylvie Courvoisier (piano) solo (CH)
————————–
Sylvie Courvoisier is a Swiss pianist, composer and improviser based since 1998 in Brooklyn, New York City. She has led several groups over the years and has recorded over 25 albums as a leader or co-leader for different labels, notably ECM, Tzadik, or Intakt Records, and over 35 cds as a sideperson.
She has performed and recorded with John Zorn, Mark Feldman, Yusef Lateef, Ikue Mori, Tony Oxley, Tim Berne, Joey Baron, Joëlle Léandre, Herb Robertson, Butch Morris, Evan Parker, Mark Dresser, Ellery Eskelin, Lotte Anker, Fred Frith, Michel Godard, Tomasz Stańko, and many many more.
And that’s just one of the reviews of her playing: “razor-sharp edges, sounds of a thousand dancing needles, thundering power arising from deeply yawning chasms, mystic fluorescence throughout, calmness combined with a mysterious kind of moving.” I can’t wait for it!!!
William Parker + Hamid Drake (double bass + drums) duo (US)
————————–
William Parker & Hamid Drake are two of our all-time-favorite musicians on this planet! They are ones that made such a humongous impact on American improvised music, that has been reverberating across the peoples’ souls on all the continents.
William, a native New Yorker, has recorded over 150 albums, published six books, and taught and mentored hundreds of young musicians and artists. He has been called “one of the most inventive bassists/leaders since Charles Mingus”, The Village Voice called him, “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time”, and Time Out New York named him one of the “50 Greatest New York Musicians of All Time.” He has been a key figure in the New York and European creative music scenes since the 1970s, and has worked all over the world. He has performed with pretty much everybody: Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Peter Brotzmann, Milford Graves, Peter Kowald, and David S. Ware, and many others.
Hamid is a very versatile player, widely regarded as one of the best percussionists in jazz and improvised music, but being equally successful as reggae drummer or world music player. Incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to using the standard trap set, he has collaborated extensively with top free jazz improvisers including Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Fred Anderson, Archie Shepp, David Murray, Reggie Workman, and the list goes on.
I can’t believe they are coming, this will be the concert of the year!
