“SPIRITUALITÄT DER SINNE – die Welt der mittelalterlichen Dichterin Hadewijch von Brabant”
Vocame are four female singers and the multi-instrumentalist Michael Popp. They form a unique ensemble, founded in 2008 in the course of the first recording of music by the Byzantine composer Kassia from the 9th century. One focus of Vocame’s work is the exploration of female composers of the Middle Ages. Unique, partly unheard and forgotten compositions are discovered.
An intensive examination of questions of interpretation as well as varied and creative arrangements create an individual and unmistakable sound of this ensemble. At Vocame’s concerts, space, light and movement are part of the performance, adding further dimensions to the music.
In 2025 the group presented a totally new program, “SPIRITUALITY OF THE SENSES“, exploring the world of the medieval poet Hadewijch of Brabant.
In the 13th century, Hadewijch led a group of Beguines, members of a secular women’s order. Her poetry can be understood as instruction for these women and girls, among other things.
It is significant that one looks in vain for the words “Jesus”, “Christ”, “cross”, “Mary”, “prayer” and many other central terms and beliefs of Christian doctrine. The mysteries of faith such as the virgin birth, heaven and hell, including Satan, are not mentioned, nor are the stories of the saints and martyrs. In contrast, the word “Minne”, or “love”, is constantly repeated in such a forceful way that it almost acts like a mantra, transmitting the power of love to the listeners through the sound of the
word.
Minne appears as an allegorical figure who is called upon, whom one implores, whose support one seeks and whose benefits one accepts with gratitude. Dialogues with Minne are healing and
blessing, but also a cause of depression if one does not feel enough strength to fight with her for the happiness of all of us.
Love is not something to be trifled with, it does not unfold its effect in a fleeting moment, it does not support the superficial, but requires strength, courage and perseverance.
Furthermore, love works in conjunction with the forces of nature, the seasons, the course of the stars, and therefore with everything that can be grasped by our senses and “inspires” us in the
truest sense of the word.
Understood in this way, Hadewijch’s poetry and teaching is a SPIRITUALITY OF THE SENSES.
