Traditional Norwegian music and dance
During the concert, several tunes will be played on the hardingfele, while others are from the Norwegian-American old-time tradition and are played on vanlig fele – “normal fiddle” – accompanied by banjo and guitar. Together with archival recordings and pictures, the duo will demonstrate the oldest couple dances, or bygdedans. Some of the oldest tunes are mentioned in the sagas as calling forth supernatural forces. Others are lyrical listening pieces telling stories of tragic love or describing nature and imitating bird calls. The songs include short joking rhymes, a Christmas ballad about the gnome on the farm, and fiddle tune verses.
Feleboga was founded by Hans-Hinrich and Elizabeth in 1998 as a hardingfele duo. When their son Mattias joined them, first on spoons and slide guitar, later on fiddle and banjo, the ensemble became a family band performing both Norwegian traditional and American old-time music. With the addition of other musician friends on flutes, banjo, and bass, Feleboga has played concerts and led dances in Norway, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Thailand, and the US.
