Saxophonist and composer Maria Faust is best known for her award-winning large contemporary jazz ensembles including Sacrum Facere, Machina, and Jazz Catastrophe.
Faust is one of the most celebrated Estonian musicians of all time and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and honors including multiple Danish and Estonian Music Awards. Her work and unique musical language as a composer and improviser are easily identifiable while being challenging to describe due to their inventiveness and her broad spectrum of influences.
Faust’s live performances are known for their intense energy and range of emotions and have been celebrated worldwide by audiences and reviewers for decades. Faust is also known for her commissioned works for groups other than her own. She has written music for the Danish Radio Big Band, Sointi Jazz Orchestra, Tallinn Philharmonics, Choir Collegium Musicale choir, and many more.

MARIA FAUST SACRUM FACERE has won multiple Danish Music Awards and Estonian Music Awards. The group’s music is modern contemporary, experimental, sacral, and is presented by 5 horns and organ or piano. MFSF’s first recording was inspired by Estonian folklore and traditional runo-singing, seamlessly weaving together jazz, folk, classical, and pop music elements. Her unique sound code thrives in contrasts between instruments: on the first (self-titled) album SACRUM FACERE, between the kannel (a traditional Estonian lap-harp used in folk music), wind ensemble, and prepared piano, exploring various combinations throughout riveting musical vehicles. On ORGAN, Faust focused on the sound and story of cathedral and church organs. Originally invented as a communicative medium between humans and divine deities, the
instrument has also been called a “God Praising Machine.”
