Clowns might not tell their secrets, but someone likes to sing about them. Adina Friis leads the audience into a world of imagination, mysticism, poetry. Inspired by the elfish Northern woods her acclaimed musical project „Luumu“ is a trip from security into the unexpected. A story about anything you wish it to be.
Young Danish-Swiss piano player and singer Adina Friis created her own world of sound – a collected universe of a trip through both surreal and naturalistic landscapes and into ancient woods. To the darkness of the northern winter or to sunlit camel-caravan-sahara and right into a mysterious travelling circus.
These sounds are inspired by travelling through Lappland and Scandinavia for a longer period when she was 20 years old.
“The silence of those woods made me hear the music I truly want to create. It was my own escapism, which I want to share with the audience“.
The clown is a returning character throughout the project Luumu, standing for the surreal part and if you look closely, you might find a clown in every society. The debut album „The Eye Of The Clown Behind The Spyglass“ was released in April 2014 by Unit Records. It received some good response, for example four stars in the swiss/german jazz magazine „Jazz’n’More“ and even some international recognition from Iceland. The second album „Projection“ was released in early 2017 by Aurora Music.
A lyrical approach lies in the pianoplaying, accompanied by doublebass and drums. A folktone meets a modern jazzband. Adina’s voice is both tender and frail and tells the stories of her own peculiar life, of people, who lost themselves in the endless woods of their soul, of journeys into states of mind, we maybe didn’t know, and about the great secret of time and its ticking clock in all of us. But some of the stories are more like tales – mystic ghostly creatures and venues enter your imagination and bring you into the thicket of dark forrests with a fire.
„I sing about the mental state of an observing human being, trying to figure out, what this is all about,“ says Adina Friis.
After trying many different music styles and instruments, she started to write songs which would become her most important project, „Luumu“. A similar imagination of sound brought the three musicians, which all three studied at the jazz conservatory in Lucerne/Switzerland, together. They see themselves as part of a new generation of musicians in Europe, who don’t think of jazz as a narrowly defined or even elitist style but rather as a bridge to connect different musical directions and so they are not afraid to break the boundaries of genres. As a musical inspiration they would name Joni Mitchell, Regina Spektor, Radiohead, Eivor, The Doors or Jan Johansson, but also contemporary classical composers like David Lang, the old masters of jazz and always the Beatles.
The new album “PROJECTION” lies between Jazz, Singer/Songwriter and Folk Noir.
One thing is certain: anyone who gets involved with “PROJECTION” will be rewarded. And sees the world, if only for the duration of a concert, from a different view.
