Lisa Ullén – piano solo (SE)
Lisa Ullén is one of Sweden’s most influential pianists in contemporary music, and a regular on the free- jazz and improisational scene. Internationally recognized as a distinctive and uncompromising composer and musician, Ullén over the last decade has produced more than fifteen albums, either in her own name or in collaborations with musicians such as Charlotte Hug, Okkyung Lee Nina de Heney, Mariam Wallentin, Maggie Nicols. She has toured in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan.
Ullén now releases Piano Works – a triple CD of solo piano recordings – as well as the vinyl EP Sekvenser och Lager (Sequences and Layers) with Motståndsorkestern (the Resistance Orchestra), which contains Ullén’s compositions for a bigger band, in which no less than four double basses provide a solid foundation.
“there’s an impressive range of approaches in evidence here, mostly condensed into short vignettes that are varied enough to command attention. It helps too that there’s a palpable feeling of puzzlement and consolidation, as though Ullén is working through problems at the keyboard in real time.”
– Daniel Spicer, The Wire Magazine May Issue 2018
“You could drop references such as Cecil Taylor and David Tudor. But what I think of, rather, is how precise is Ullén’s own expression. She has a complex distinctiveness and timing that emerges to a great degree even in the latently explosive group playing of ”Sekvenser och lager.” Seen as resistance, her playing is not a sweeping gesture, but a highly controlled, not to say virtuosic, alternative.”
– Johannes Cornell, Dagens Nyheter
