Fred Frith: guitar
Lotte Anker: saxophones
Magda Mayas: piano
Heike Liss: video/live visuals
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith has been making noise of one kind or another for almost 50 years, starting with the iconic rock collective Henry Cow, which he cofounded withTim Hodgkinson in 1968. Fred is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, song-writer, and composer for film, dance and theater. Through bands like Art Bears, Massacre, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog, the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet and Cosa Brava, he has stayed close to his roots in rock and folk music while branching out in many other directions.
Lotte Anker: saxophoneplayer and composer working in the field between experimental jazz/ improvisation and contemporary music. Her music includes both melodic (often twisted or fragmented) elements and more abstract textural material and covers a wide territory from minimal, transparency to dense and dark expressionism. Lotte Anker has been initiator of a number of highly acclaimed collaborations and groups.
Magda Mayas is a Berlin-based piano/clavinet player. Over the past 20 years she developed a vocabulary utilizing both the inside as well as the exterior parts of the piano, using amplification, preparations and
objects that become extensions of the instrument itself.
Mayas explores textural, linear sound collage, and has developed a set of techniques that draw on the history of prepared and inside piano vocabulary, but are highly individualized and expand the language for internal piano music making. Mayas performs internationally solo and in collaboration with a large number of musicians and composers.
Heike Liss works in a variety of media, including video, photography, drawing, site-specific installation and public intervention. Her biggest inspiration is everyday life—the world and the people around her. Heike’s award-winning work has been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries and at film and music festivals. Heike lives and works in California and Switzerland and teaches transdisciplinary Art at the Universidad Austral de Chile.
Over the last ten years mixed-media artist Heike Liss has been experimenting with improvisatory live visuals in the context of collaborative performance with dancers and musicians. Working with pre-recorded personal and found footage, as well as live feeds, she combines video mixing and real time digital drawing. More recently she has also been drawing on window panes in dialogue with and in response to experimental live music. Since 2014 she performs regularly with her longtime collaborator and travelling companion Fred Frith, as well as with other musical improvisers such as Ikue Mori, Okkyung Lee, Chris Cutler, Theresa Wong, Susana Silva Santos, Shelley Hirsch and in the duo skratchklang with Thea Farhadian.
