Zoe Efstathiou/Egil Kalman/Deniz Angelaki (gr/se)
Zoe Efstathiou (gr) -prepared piano, electronics
Egil Kalman (se) – modular synthesizer, double bass
Deniz Angelaki (gr) – live painting
The improvising electroacoustic duo of Zoe Efstathiou (prepared piano, electronics) and Egil Kalman (modular synthesizer, double bass), explores the materiality of space by sculpting sound objects which are dynamically changing through interaction and improvisation. Subtle nuances alter the surface characteristics and boundaries of the objects, evoking a sensuous and tangible experience. The piano, through the use of extended techniques is explored in its timbral possibilities and serves as a surface for tactile explorations, often imitating the electronic world. The modular synthesizers take the form of physical masses, projecting the gravitational and material attributes of the sound with their formations. Real time sound spatialisation with the use of quadraphonic sound introduces the audience into new and exciting spaces.
By tracing the microlevel sound articulations and the through timbral explorations of acoustic and electronic intstruments, large scale forms are created where the momentary interpolates with the ever evolving. The music reflects the ephemeral, the transient state between future and past, inviting the listener to experience time as a superficial characteristic of reality.
For their concert at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, the duo collaborates with improvising live painter Deniz Angelaki, whose real time video creation, becomes not only a visual, but also a musical counterpoint.
