Giacomo Gorzanis: solo lute music
Giacomo Gorzanis, born Apulian, blind, citizen of Trieste, worked all his career between Italy, Slovenia, Austria, in an area at that time under the influence of the powerful Augsburgs of Austria.
He published four book of tablature for the lute, two books of “napolitanas” (sort of connection point between court and popoular songs) and he wrote what is probably the first written document of music in all keys in the so-called Muenchen manuscript, “Libro de intabolatura di liuto” (1567
Where the musical genres of the half of XVI century seems to be very standardized, the interpreter discovers a whole world of different moods of the rithms, the diminutions, the poliphony with grace and lightness.
The same dance kinds, such as “passamezzo” and “saltarello” become then very different pieces of music, with whom the interpreter composes a full picture of Gorzanis’ art of playing the lute.
The program follows the structure of the first recording dedicated to the composer, “Giacomo Gorzanis: solo lute music” – Michele Carreca – Sony DHM 2017.
Michele Carreca is born in Foggia, Apulia, Italy. He obtained the master in lute at Conservatorio S.Cecilia, Roma with Andrea Damiani, then followed master classes with Hopkinson Smith. Founder of the ensemble La Selva, together with the recorder player Carolina Pace, he lives in Rome and teaches lute at the Conservatorio V.Bellini, Palermo. He is active in the early music scene as a soloist and chamber musician with ensembles, orchestras. He recorded for Sony DHM, Deutsche Grammophon, Continuo Records, Urania Records, Brilliant Classics, Rai Trade. Since 2018 he is the music conductor of the contemporary dance play “Aria -arie barocche nell’aria” (No Gravity Dance Theater) at Malta International Arts Festival and Inspiration Festival in Moscow.
