“RITUS ORPHAEOS” – The “Cantore al Liuto” in history from the Middle Ages to the Golden Age.
Concert of famous Italian Medieval and Renaissance songs, performed by two voices, lute and percussion
The “Cantore al Liuto” is an italian figure, in which very few interpreters had until now ventured into its fundamental rediscovery; with this performance we want to offer some representative examples of how this particular type of musician – so close to contemporary sensibility – evolved from the Middle Ages until the period of its greatest splendor, the Renaissance, through the reinterpretation of famous melodies accompanied by different and appropriate string instruments, all according to the repertoires of the specific eras. From the medieval pieces to the original tablatures, specifically written for voice and lute, through to the ‘in style’ elaborate versions of famous pieces from that time, this concert will unfold a suggestive journey through the fascinating sounds of the era of the “Cantore al Liuto” – singer accompanying himself with his lute.
The distinctive traits of this concert are the accompaniment of the lute and the variety and richness of its sound, capable of emphasizing the voices and the vocal elaborations of the songs in the improvisational style, until arriving to that so meticulously described in the treatise “Prattica di Musica” by Lodovico Zacconi from Pesaro, an authority of the executional praxis of the late renaissance singing in Italy.
Simone Sorini, very appreciated interpreter of Ancient Music to international level, is “Cantore al Liuto” – a musical protagonist from the past whose important figure, long forgotten by the musical historiography, is today brought back to life through the studies and music of M° Sorini. Tenor and multi-instrumentalist, over the years he has gathered and honed a deep knowledge of medieval and Renaissance strings instruments like lutes, citoles, guinterne, citterns, chitarrini, oud, that he uses as accompaniment to his singing.
