COPENHAGEN RENAISSANCE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015 – SOLO!

ZEPHYR’S BREATH – bagpipes of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
Today being almost exclusively associated with Scotland, the bagpipe was for over half a millennium one of the most popular musical instruments throughout Europe. Having been used by shepherds since Antiquity, in the Middle Ages it became popular especially during the Christmas seasons and many medieval illuminations show shepherds and angels alike with many different versions of this versatile instrument. Later, it slided down the social ladder and ended up providing accompaniment to the seedy underbelly of the Late Middle Ages; becoming the instrument of choice for beggars, thieves and the worst of all lowlifes – dance musicians! Erik Ask-Upmark will be showcasing (at least) ten different types of bagpipes in this concert that takes the listener on a journey from north to south and from the Viking Age into the Renaissance.
Erik Ask-Upmark has been performing on different bagpipes for over 20 years. He has been awarded the Swedish title “Riksspelman” (“Official master musician”), one of only a handful who have managed that on the Swedish bagpipes. He often tours Europe and America, both solo and with his music groups Dråm, Svanevit and Falsobordone.
