The highlights of the festival are:
#1 William Parker & Hamid Drake duo!!!
We are VERY excited to announce, that we will have William Parker & Hamid Drake playing a duo set for y’all during Freedom Music Festival vol. 3!!!
They are two of our personal all-time-favorite musicians of this planet, and ones that made such a humongous impact on American improvised music, that has been reverberating across the peoples’ souls on all continents.
THIS IS A SHOW THAT YOU CAN NOT MISS!!!
#2: Sylvie Courvoisier solo!!!
We are very proud to announce that Sylvie Courvoisier will play a solo set for us all during Freedom Music Festival vol. 3!!! She is by far one of the most fascinating improvising pianists we know of and we just can’t wait to finally hear her live! Here’s one of the very many writings about Sylvie’s playing:
“This highly original and new music has it all: razor-sharp edges, sounds of a thousand dancing needles, thundering power arising from deeply yawning chasms, mystic fluorescence throughout, calmness combined with a mysterious kind of moving.” How’s that for a recommendation? THIS WILL BE AWESOME!!!
#3: Joëlle Léandre & Théo Ceccaldi duo!!!
This is a pure excitement to be able to announce, that Joëlle Léandre & Théo Ceccaldi will perform in a duo at Freedom Music Festival vol. 3!!! The double bass player Joëlle Léandre has been storming through the world both as a contemporary classical player and free improviser for decades. We mean: John Cage and Pierre Boulez has been writing music especially for her, it is THAT big. She has performed with Derek Bailey, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Irene Schweizer and pretty much everybody else you’ve heard about. The violinist Théo Ceccaldi, though younger, is proving his virtuosity and musical sensitivity on an equal level and he WILL put you on your knees. I RALLY CAN’T WAIT!!!
#4: Free Improv Themed Movie Night!
We are extremely happy to present the news to you, that we’ll have a free improv themed movie night at Husets Biograf during this year’s Freedom Music Festival, where we’ll screen two amazing documentaries and have a concert in between the screenings!
First, there’ll be a Danish premiere of a documentary film about the legendary New York Art Quartet, “The Breath Courses Through Us” (2013) directed by Alan Roth. It’s a special treat since it was the Danish/American reed player John Tchicai that founded this amazing band. And the film presents an invaluable account.
Secondly, we’ll have a documentary that like no other presents the New York free improv scene of the 80’s, one that is widly considered to be a cult film by now. It is “Rising Tones Cross” (1985) directed by Ebba Jahn we are talking about! Film presents William Parker, John Zorn, Peter Kowald, Billy Bang, Jemeel Moondoc, Peter Brötzmann, Iréne Schweizer, and SO MANY others who shook this world with their music, at work. Whether you’ve already seen it or not, it is a must to see it in the movie theater!
But there’s so much more!
Lets celebrate freedom & music! Be with us!
The festival is generously supported by Statens Kunstfond, Københavns Musikudvalg, Nørrebro Lokaludvalg, Sonningfonden, DJBFA / Komponister og Sangskrivere, and Dansk Musiker Forbund – DMF, Musikforlæggerne i Danmark/Koda’s Cultural Contributions : THANK YOU!
